چکیده

3D geo-database research is a promising field to support challenging applications such as 3D urban planning, environmental monitoring, infrastructure management, and early warning or disaster management and response. In these fields, interdisciplinary research in GIScience and related fields is needed to support the modelling, analysis, management, and integration of large geo-referenced data sets, which describe human activities and geophysical phenomena. Geo-databases may serve as platforms to integrate 2D maps, 3D geo-scientific models, and other geo-referenced data. However, current geo-databases do not provide sufficient 3D data modelling and data handling techniques. New 3D geo-databases are needed to handle surface and volume models. This article first presents a 25-year retrospective of geo-database research. Data modelling, standards, and indexing of geo-data are discussed in detail. New directions for the development of 3D geo-databases to open new fields for interdisciplinary research are addressed. Two scenarios in the fields of early warning and emergency response demonstrate the combined management of human and geophysical phenomena. The article concludes with a critical outlook on open research problems. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Examination of Database Supported Spatio - Temporal Intersection

The quickly increasing number of spatio-temporal applications in fields like environmental monitoring, geology and mobile communication is a new challenge to the development of geo-databases. However, the query functionality of today ́s geo-information systems is still limited to the thematic attributes of spatial objects and to spatial 2D objects. In this paper we present two examples for the d...

3D Spatial Operations in Geo DBMS Environment for 3D GIS

Next generation of GIS software should be able to manipulate and analyse complex situations of real world phenomena. One of the desired components in such software or system is the geometric modeling that works with 3D spatial operations. This paper presents a portion of problem that we currently attempt to solve, that is the 3D spatial operations for Geo DBMS. Some popular spatial operations i...

Developing Three-dimensional (3d) Topological Model for 3d Gis

3D spatial data modeling is one of the key research problems in 3D GIS. More and more applications depend on these 3D spatial data. Mostly, these data are stored in Geo-DBMSs. However, recent Geo-DBMSs do not support 3D primitives modeling, it only able to describe a single-attribute of the third-dimension, i.e. modeling 2.5D datasets that used 2D primitives (plus a single z-coordinate) such as...

Towards 3D Geoinformatics and Computational Civil Engineering Support for Cooperative Tracks Planning

SUMMARY The planning of road, railway, and subway tracks in urban environments is a manifold task because of complex legal, environmental, economic, and structural problems. However, skills and knowledge of the participants differ substantially and computer support for complex planning still is at its beginning. Especially computer-aided collaborative planning for 3D city and building models is...

The Building Blocks of User-Focused 3D City Models

At Ordnance Survey, GB, we have taken an incremental approach to creating our 3D geospatial database. Research at Ordnance Survey has focused not only on methods for deriving 3D data, but also on the needs of the user in terms of the actual tasks they perform. This provides insights into the type and quality of the data required and how its quality is conveyed. In 2007, using task analysis and ...
